Bennett Koch returns to Sheffield

B. Braun Sheffield Sharks last night announced Bennett Koch will be back at the club for the upcoming 2020-21 BBL season.

The announcement was uniquely made via a Sharks Facebook livestream on Wednesday evening, where the Sharks gameday announcer, Mike Shaft, revealed Koch and then proceeded with a short interview.

The 6’10” American had a successful first campaign with the Sharks, earning his way into the club’s starting line-up and being a contributor from the start.

“I’m excited about coming back,” said Koch. “I had a great overall experience in Sheffield, it’s a shame it ended the way it did. It will be great to get back and build off of the things we accomplished last season.”

The third year pro out of Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin comes from a basketball family. Bennett and his two older brothers all attended and had successful careers at Northern Iowa University.

“Bennett is another guy on our team that comes from great basketball pedigree and a basketball family,” added Sharks GM Sarah Backovic. “We were extremely happy with his performance last season and are excited to see how he develops moving forward.”

The 25-year-old Centre averaged 11.3 points and 6.4 rebounds through all competitions. Koch saw a Sharks career high of 25 points against Newcastle in December 2019 and a Sharks career high of 17 rebounds against Leicester in November 2019. He also registered sixth in the league last season for offensive rebounds.

Bennett is the Sharks sixth player announcement so far, joining Mike Tuck, Mackey McKnight, Nicholas Lewis, Rob Marsden, and Callum Jones.

Head Coach Atiba Lyons reflected on the signing, “Everybody loves Bennett on and off the court. He has a great attitude and is exactly what we were looking for in the forward/centre slot. I’m confident he will continue to grow off the success of last season.”
